Right after getting a tattoo, your artist will cover it with a plastic film, also known as second skin. The film is kept on for 2-3 hours to protect the tattoo from outside bacteria and to allow the initial healing process to begin.
Once you remove the second skin, gently wash the tattooed area with warm water and a gentle wash. Use clean hands or a soft cloth, avoiding scrubbing or harsh motions. Pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel, paper towel or air dry.
Apply a thin layer of a suitable tattoo aftercare balm (such as Bepanthen or Dr Pickles Tattoo Balm) using a clean finger to keep the tattoo moisturised throughout the healing process for the next two weeks. Avoid using petroleum-based products such as Vaseline or paw paw ointment as they can clog pores.
It’s normal for your tattoo to itch during healing, but resist the urge to scratch or pick at it. Scratching can introduce bacteria and prolong the healing time or even cause damage to your new tattoo.
For the first few weeks, avoid exposing your tattoo to direct sunlight and submerging it in pools, hot tubs, or baths. Protect your tattoo with clothing or a non-stick sterile dressing in the sun or water.
Avoid tight or abrasive clothing. Wear loose-fitting, breathable clothing that won’t rub against or irritate your healing tattoo. Avoid rough fabrics that can cause friction.
For the remainder of the healing process, gently clean your tattoo twice daily with mild soap or gentle wash and water and apply a thin layer of aftercare balm.
Every tattoo and healing process can be different, so it’s essential to follow any additional aftercare instructions provided by your tattoo artist at Coastline Ink. They may have specific recommendations based on the size, placement, skin type, or complexity of your tattoo.
